How to split a PDF into separate files

Published

Sometimes one PDF holds several documents: a bank statement for twelve months, a scanned stack of invoices, or a book you only need one chapter of. Splitting it gives you each part as its own file.

Five ways to split

Split PDF offers a method for each situation:

  1. One file per range: type ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, 7- and each range becomes a file. Best when you know where each part starts.
  2. One file per page: every page becomes its own PDF, for example single invoices from one scan.
  3. Every few pages: equal parts, such as every 2 pages for two-page forms.
  4. One file per bookmark: follows the chapters of a book or a long report.
  5. Files up to a size: keeps each file under a limit, such as 10 MB for an email or upload form.

Step by step

  1. Open Split PDF and add your file.
  2. Choose how to split it and, if asked, type the page ranges or the size.
  3. Press Split PDF. Several files are saved together as one ZIP file.
  4. Unzip it (double-click on most computers) to get the separate PDFs.

When you only need a few pages

If you want just pages 4 and 9 in one new file, Extract pages is quicker. If you want to keep everything except a few pages, use Remove pages.
