Digital signature: questions and answers
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened and changed by code running in your own browser tab. The page is locked so it cannot send data to any server, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.
What does a digital signature prove?
That the document was signed with your certificate and has not been changed since. PDF readers show the signer and warn if anything is edited later. Readers trust it fully when your certificate comes from an authority they know, such as one your employer or government issued.
Is my certificate or password sent anywhere?
No. The certificate is opened and used inside this browser tab only. It is not uploaded or stored, and it is gone when you close the page.
Which certificates work?
RSA certificates in .p12 or .pfx files that include the private key, as Windows, macOS and most authorities export them. Elliptic-curve (ECDSA) certificates and USB tokens or smart cards are not supported yet. A PDF that is already digitally signed cannot be signed again here, because that would break the first signature.
